$nameEVELYN Y.Q. LAU Evelyn Y.Q. Lau, 93, passed peacefully April 27, 2015. Services 11 a.m. (visitation 9:30 to 11), Saturday, May 9, 2015, United Church of Christ Judd St. Honolulu. Burial Punchbowl, 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 21, 2015. Evelyn (Evey) born July 14, 1921, in Pittsburgh PA, youngest child of James Yee Quil and Hom Toy Hop, both immigrated from Taishan, Guangdong, China. Sisters Rosalie Woo, Grace Wong, brothers Joseph Quil, Howard Quil, since passed away. Evey grew up in Pittsburgh, and graduated from Wilkinsburg HS, and U. of Pittsburgh. She met Daniel B.T. Lau (Danny), when he was sent to Pittsburgh while in the U.S. Army Air Corp to train as a pilot for World War II. Danny fell in love with Evey, described by some as the most beautiful Chinese girl in town (there weren't many; Evey is laughing!). She volunteered to care for his battle wounds when he returned and they wed in Pittsburgh in 1946 and moved to Danny's hometown of Honolulu. Evey taught in the public schools for decades, and raised her sons Jeffrey, Russell, and Girard, and her daughter Vicki Lau. Evey helped raise her grandchildren Daniel, Jennifer, Gregory, and Eric. She also taught Sunday School and volunteered at UCC Judd St. for decades. Evey loved her parakeets and turtle, and cared for other children after school. She loved her athlete husband Danny so much that she attended nearly all his sporting events and accompanied him to decades of UH collegiate events too. Evey played mahjong and tennis well into her late 80's. She was an incredibly loving wife, mother and grandmother, who showered her family and those around her with deep affection and compassion. Just ask her daughters-in-laws, Susan Tilden Lau, Constance Hee Lau, and Miyuki Nakahara Lau. Evey was even honored as the United Chinese Society Chinese Mother of the Year. Evey lived a full life, yet showed kindness to all. If anyone deserves to be in heaven, it is Evey, and her family is comforted knowing she is there, watching over all of us who were so lucky to have known her. The family requests no flowers, and that any remembrances be made to the Hawaiian Humane Society, the United Church of Christ Judd St., or the UH Foundation.
