Robert J. HackmanRobert J. "Bob" Hackman, age 71, of Honolulu, HI, passed away unexpectedly on August 26, 2020.

Bob was born May 28, 1949 to Robert H. Hackman and Jean Cavanaugh Hackman in Cleveland, OH and raised in Youngstown, OH where he graduated from Boardman High School. He graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971 and from Northwestern University with a Juris Doctor in 1974.

Professionally, Bob practiced law with the U.S. Attorney's offices in Chicago, Denver, and Honolulu before transitioning to private practice in Honolulu with the law firm of Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel. When Bob, his wife, and daughter moved back to "the mainland," he worked for the Wisconsin Department of Revenue as Deputy Chief Counsel in Madison, WI. After several years of barely surviving Wisconsin winters, Bob retired for the first time and moved back to Hawaii. The law firm of Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel welcomed Bob back and he worked there until his retirement in 2019 at the age of 70. Bob was truly "one of the good guys." He was honest, hardworking, and fair in all aspects of his life.

Bob is survived by his daughter Lilly Hackman and former wife (but forever friend) Robin Hackman; both of Madison, WI. We are heartbroken that we were not able to be with Bob in his final moments, but we take some comfort in knowing that he passed away in what he always called "his spiritual home," Hawaii.

There will be no services. If you would like to donate in Bob's memory, please consider one of his favorite charities: Catholic Charities, USA or The Hawaiian Humane Society.

Harry Masao NakataHarry Masao Nakata of Honolulu, Hawaii passed away peacefully from natural causes on March 24, 2020 at age 92. Born in Honolulu in 1927, he enjoyed growing up in Kapahulu and graduated from Kaimuki High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving as a sergeant in the intelligence corps in post-war Japan. Upon his discharge, he married Kazue Kanemoto, whom he met in Yamaguchi, Japan and studied architecture at the University of California-Berkeley. He completed his Master of Architecture at Berkeley, then started practicing as an architect in Fresno, California.

After feeling a bit home-sick, he returned to Honolulu in 1962 with his wife and three daughters in tow. He worked nearly fifty years as an architect, designing public buildings and a few private residences. Some of his designs won awards and have been archived in a university library in California. Passionate about art, design, and architecture, he was also a skilled sculptor, photographer, and woodcrafter. If he had his way, he would have loved to have been the next George Nakashima, the famed Japanese-American woodworker and furnituremaker. For many years the family enjoyed an elegant coffee table Harry made by hand that adorned the living-room in their house in Manoa.

Harry is preceded in death by his beloved wife Kazue, and survived by his three daughters, Linda Nakata, Adele Silliman (wife of James Silliman), and Cheryl Nakata, as well as by his brother James Nakata and sister Florence Matsuo. He will be placed at rest in the National Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) with Kazue, followed by a private memorial at a later date. Condolences with no koden may be sent to the following address:

She spent her last days in her home in Niu Valley where she lived for 95 years. Her family wants to thank everyone for their outpouring of aloha for Mom. We will miss her, but we know that what she loved most was knowing her family and friends are doing well and living with kindness. We will be gathering with family and friends to celebrate her remarkable life when the time is right.
