RUTH SLIGHT LUCAS

RUTH SLIGHT LUCAS"Heavens to Betsy!" Wednesday, February 20, 2019 Ruth Slight Lucas passed peacefully from this life into an eternal and heavenly life with our Lord and Savior. A beautiful, kind, and compassionate soul who always saw the best in others, she was known by her family for her sharp wit, tireless advocacy for the underprivileged, and an undying commitment to quality education for all. She was recruited to Hawai'i in 1946 after graduating in Journalism from the University of St. Louis to serve as a reporter for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. She later moved to the Bay area in the late 40's and 50's with her family serving as an investigative reporter for various newspapers from San Francisco to Salinas. She returned to Hawai'i in 1961 making Ka'a'awa her home with her family, and taught English at Castle High School in Kane'ohe, and then began a career teaching writing as a professor of journalism at Kapi'olani Community College, where she eventually retired in 1990. In addition to her career as a teacher and educator, she also faithfully served her church and community in advocacy and engagement, especially to protect and preserve the rural lifestyle on the windward side of O'ahu. She hosted coffee hours for candidates she believed in, and wrote passionately to elected officials about issues her community cared about. She spent years fighting for Hawaiian land issues in Makaua, Ka'a'awa, Wai'ahole, and against the construction of the H-3 freeway. She was a life-long active and faithful member of St. John's By-The-Sea Episcopal Church in Kahalu'u, O'ahu. Her life-giving spirit is carried on by her three children George Lucas, Louise Ka'ohua Lucas, and Paul Nahoa Lucas, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren and her extended family and friends from every walk of life. There will be a celebration of her life at St. John's By-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Kahalu'u on Friday, March 29th, beginning with visitation at 9 a.m., a Eucharist Service at 10a.m., followed by reception at the Hall. After the reception, her ashes will be scattered at the family home in Ka'a'awa. The meaning of the name "Ruth" is compassion. True to form and her name, she leaves a legacy of compassion to her family, friends, and community. We will be constantly reminded of her compassion through her prayers, in which she would always end with blessings "to those we love, and those who need our love". While we have immense grief and sorrow of her passing, she is always quick to remind us during difficult times that "this too shall pass". We love you Nana!
