Harold Richard Hauge85, of Makaha, Hawaii, passed away on September 21, 2018 at his home after a long illness. He was born in Los Angeles, CA., to Palmer and Alma Hauge on September 5, 1933. Richard, as he was known, loved the water and surfed in the late '40s and early '50s in Los Angeles where he worked as a lifeguard. He graduated from UCLA as an engineer in 1956 and made his home in Makaha where he raised his family. He worked for the Navy for 35 years, both at Lualualei and then Pearl Harbor where he was instrumental in using computers to automate planning processes at the shipyard. After he retired, he did extensive volunteer community work. As a young man he spent endless hours catching waves at Makaha which he considered Heaven on Earth. Between writing computer programs, he shaped boards and taught his children to love the water. As a grandpa and great-grandpa, he took a passel of kids to Kiddie's Beach aka "Aki's" at 4:00 p.m. every day, rain or shine, for decades and into his 80s. He taught all to swim like fish. He tossed them out in the waves to prove they could swim in before letting them have their own board. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Billie Jean Hauge; children: Disa, Dana (Grayson Hoppe), Eric (Marlene) and Evan (Robina); 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 20th, 2018 at his beloved Makaha Surfing Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Memory of H.
