ARTHUR H. DECOSTE, MOE Arthur Henry (Moe) DeCoste left this earth on September 5, 2017. Moe was born July 21, 1925 in Boston, MA to Augustus and Caroline DeCoste. He grew up in Jamaica Plain, MA and joined the US Marine Corps in 1942. He served with the 2nd Marine Division in the Pacific Theater and was listed as killed in action in the Battle of Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands in 1943, but was later found wounded and transferred to Tripler Army Hospital in Hawaii. From there he served at Camp Tarawa on the Island of Hawaii, named by the Marines in honor of one of the greatest sacrifices that they had ever had to make to save the United States. He trained at Camp Tarawa in preparation for the Battles of Saipan and Tinian in the Mariana Islands and was wounded on Saipan in 1944. As a Marine, Moe was the recipient of two Purple Hearts by age 20. After discharge in 1945, he returned to Boston and reenlisted with the Marines in 1946, serving in the Caribbean Islands in Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Cuba. He was again honorably discharged in 1949. Moe returned to Boston and shortly thereafter enlisted in the US Army in 1950. He served at Fort Dix, NJ and in the Korean War from 1950-51. Moe attended Combat Engineer School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and because of his expert skills he was transferred to West Point, New York to teach cadets the art of building floating bridges. He then served at Ft. Hood during the Bay of Pigs. In 1963, Moe transferred to Schofield Barracks in Hawaii as a member of the 65th Engineer Battalion of the 25th Infantry Division. He served in Vietnam in both 1964 and 1966, completing over 25 missions. His final assignment was in Eschborn, Germany in 1967. Moe was the recipient of numerous awards and commendations, including the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation. Moe was a loving husband to his wife, Ruth of Highlands Ranch, the love of his life. He was father to daughters, Cynthia Orlando of Hawaii and Wynne Ellen Day (Deceased), son Charles DeCoste and his wife Linda Decoste of Roxborough Park and predeceased sons inlaw, Robert Orlando and Richard Thomas Day Jr. Moe loved his grandchildren, Mila Orlando Pelekane, Regina Orlando and Jarem Day of Hawaii, Evan and Lauren DeCoste of Denver; and great grandchildren Kai Orlando and Bella Gracie Day of Hawaii. He was loved by all who knew him, including brothers in-law Tom McDonough and Gene Morrison; sisters in-law Carol and Phyllis McDonough and Linda Morrison, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of Boston. Six brothers and sisters predeceased him; Pearl, Charles, Albert, Warren, Joseph and Francis. His sister Ruthie Brink survives him at age 96. Moe loved the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, and sipping a screwdriver while he watched! He will be forever in our hearts. Viewing will be from 4-6 pm Sunday, September 17, 2017, at Horan & McConaty on E. County Line Road. A full military burial will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetary on Monday, September 18, 2017 at 12:15 pm. 80, of Waipahu, Hawaii. Roy passed away peacefully at home on July 27, 2017. Roy served in the Air National Guard for 37 years and later worked at Kapolei Golf Course. He will be remembered for his kindness, generous heart, and fastidiousness. He enjoyed fishing, playing golf and cards, and making gau. He is truly loved and will be missed by everyone. Paul was born August 10, 1949 to Seiichi and Totsue Matsuda (deceased). December 12, 1958 - August 17, 2017 Anthony Blair Costa, better known as "Tony" to family and friends, a passionate protector of rights for Hawaii's near shore fishing community, died on August 17, 2017 after a brief battle with cancer. He was 58. Born and raised in Hawaii, Tony's personal and professional life revolved around the ocean. He grew up surfing, fishing and diving offshore of Niu, developing a love of the ocean at an early age. Tony loved the area and bought a house in Niu, not far from the family home in which he was raised. Tony's other great love was his family, and he was resolute in caring for his children - daughters, 14-year-old Laura Isabella Costa and 12-year-old Sophia Jolie Costa. A member of the Class of 1977 at Punahou School, Tony completed a work-study program in tropical horticulture and botany at the Pacific Tropical Botanical Garden at Lawai, Kauai, from 1977 to 1978. A former part-time commercial fisherman, Tony joined Pacific Ocean Producers in 1993. As Director of Foreign Sales, Tony developed business opportunities for POP in American Samoa, Samoa, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea. Tony also had a strong entrepreneurial streak and was the owner of Hawaii Fresh, LLC, an import-export company that traded in vanilla. He worked with suppliers in Tahiti, Tonga and Papua New Guinea. In addition to his professional life, Tony became a tenacious proponent of community causes that touched his heart. He was a familiar sight at the State Capitol, where he was spokesperson for Hawaii Nearshore Fishermen from 1998 to 2016. He was a well-known advocate of the right of local fishermen to fish near shore waters. Tony was also instrumental in the passage of legislation in 2010 that prevents the sale of publicly-owned Hawaiian fishponds statewide. His aim was to protect and restore historic Kalauha'iha'i, which is located in Niu. He recognized the significance of restoring subterranean freshwater flows and their relationship to healthy coastal fisheries. The legislative victory made possible the ongoing community stewardship and educational programs of the Maunalua Fishpond Heritage Center. Among the other organizations Tony supported were Punahou School, the Parish of St. Clement, and the Boys & Girls Club of Honolulu. Tony's interests also included membership in the Hawaii Potters' Guild, and a long-time passion for family genealogy. Tony Costa was born in Honolulu on December 12, 1958. He is survived by his daughters Laura Isabella Costa and Sophie Jolie Costa; his mother, Mazeppa King Costa; sister, Monte Costa; brother, Page Costa of Los Angeles, California; niece Lucella Costa of Los Angeles; and aunt, Virginia A. King of Sebastian, Florida. His father, Robert O. Costa, died on February 18, 1989. Tony was formerly married to Diana Cristina Villa. Born September 14, 1938 in Waialua, and passed away peacefully at home on August 21, 2017, at the age of 78. He graduated from Waialua High School in 1956, served 12 years with the Hawaii National Guard missile unit, and retired from GTE Hawaiian Tel/Verizon after 31 years. He worked at Lockheed Martin as a missile tracker, and for the Honolulu Fire Department as a radio shop technician, where he would eventually retire from after 30 years. He loved to tinker with electronic gadgets and computers, and had a passion for music, movies, photography, and anything to do with his children and grandchildren. Basil is survived by wife Katherine, children: Brad (Lee), Mona Takeda (Andy), Lisa Wong (Wayne), and grandchildren: Laura, Hiilani, Bailey, Keahi, Kekai, and Mahina. Gary Kenneth Stern, 79, of Waikiki, Hawaii, passed away from complications with cancer at Island Hospice on August 26, 2017. Gary was born on December 2, 1937 to Eunice and William Stern. In 1943, at the age of six, he went to live in Palolo with his grandparents Elizabeth and Harry Stern. Pukele Playground was the stomping grounds for him and his bevy of friends. He had many cherished memories of his park "rat" days with the neighborhood kids from the Asato, Clark, Kekona, Asao, Kekoa, and Tringalli families. In 1955, he and his grandparents moved to Kailua. This is when Gary decided to join in 1959, he sought employment with Hawaiian Electric Company. Gary was dedicated to keeping the lights on and took great pride in his job as a lineman. He retired from Hawaiian Electric in 1990 as a working foreman after 31 years of turning darkness to light. Once retired, he enjoyed watching T.V. in his favorite rocker recliner, going to the movies, taking his dog on walks, having lunch with his friend George, and spending quality time with his wife and daughter. Gary treasured his grandchildren and especially loved to be in the audience watching his granddaughter dance hula. He will be deeply missed by his friends and family. Gary is survived by his wife Alexis; daughter, Cheyene (Ryan) Hoshino; grandchildren, Tatum and Cade-Ryan Hoshino; brothers, William (Anita) and Kepa (Kanani) Stern; sisters, Pauahi Cockett, Anela (Paul) Shimizu, and Sandy Barney. Amanda Reyna Martin, 65 of Kailua, Oahu, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her three sons on September 13, 2017. She was born on July 17, 1952 in Sogamoso, Colombia. She spent her life as a devoted mother to her sons and as a devout Catholic, dedicated to her parish, St. Anthony of Padua in Kailua. Amanda's joyous life was expressed through her love of the arts, which included hula, ballet, tap dancing, yoga, capoeira, and playing the ukulele. Her contagious smile and energy were perfect compliments to her generosity and kindness. Above all, she loved raising her three sons whom she instilled values of faith. perseverence, and love.
