Peter PJ Ng
PETER PJ NG Peter P.J. Ng, a respected lawyer who founded the law firm now known as Ng & Niebling, LLC and who served tens of thousands in the Honolulu community for 50 years, died of metastatic esophageal cancer June 26, surrounded by family. He was 75. Affectionately known for his wit and spirited off-the-cuff speeches, Peter often led his audience with a booming rendition of “Hawai’i Aloha.” He had an outgoing personality with a gift for bringing people together, which served him well in his various roles in the community. He loved to golf and was very fond of the 8th hole at Waialae Country Club. A leading trusts and estate planning attorney, Peter was a Fellow of The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and was selected as one of Hawaii’s Super Lawyers. Peter was an advocate for communities throughout Honolulu. At the time of his death he was a trustee and treasurer of the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation. He was a former trustee of Chaminade University Education Foundation, Hastings 1066 Foundation and a former board member of Palolo Chinese Home, the Honolulu Roman Catholic Foundation, and Maryknoll Schools. He was also the former director of the Saint Louis Education Center (now the Marianist Center of Hawaii). Peter attended mass daily and was an active member of Star of the Sea Catholic Church, where he was chairman of the Finance Council, a lector and eucharistic minister. Over the years he received many accolades, including Business Person of the Year by the Kaimuki Business and Professional Association (2006), Model Chinese Father of the Year by the United Chinese Society (2007), and Star of the Sea Catholic Church’s Island Treasures (2008). Maryknoll School selected Peter as a Monsignor Kekumano Honoree (2009), and he was inducted into Saint Louis School’s Gallery of Distinguished Achievers (2010) and Saint Francis School’s Hall of Fame (2013). On May 18, 2014, Catholic Charities of Hawaii unveiled the Peter P.J. Ng ‘Ulu Center, which serves as a gathering place to support counseling services and meetings on their main campus in Honolulu. Born on November 14, 1938, Peter was raised in the Palama neighborhood of Honolulu with five sisters and two brothers. His parents were Soo Chung Ng, an immigrant from China, and Julia Young, a Chinese Hawaiian from Maui. Peter said that his parents were generous with their time and talent when helping neighbors in need, and he took to heart his parents’ example of service. As a young local boy he had a strong drive to excel, thriving in neighborhood sports despite his small physique. He had the same drive for academics, and in 1952 entered Saint Louis College, where he made lifelong friendships with many who later became trusted colleagues. At Chaminade College (now Chaminade University) he studied business and was a member of the second graduating class of 1960. Initially planning to become an accountant, he saw opportunity in law and thought he was better suited for debate and trial since he “liked to talk.” Upon graduation Peter left for San Francisco to study at Hastings College of the Law. He received his Juris Doctor in 1964. He returned immediately to Honolulu and that same year was admitted to the Hawai’i State Bar. At 26 years old he eagerly established his practice. As he liked to put it, “I was in business.” Soon after, he was smitten by one Doris Quinones and proposed to her two months later. They were married within six months of dating and celebrated over 48 years together before his death. Together they raised three daughters and one son, became grandparents to five children, and traveled the world. During one of their last trips together, Peter led the tour group in singing “Hawai’i Aloha” so that their Norwegian hosts could experience the spirit of Aloha. Peter is survived by his wife Doris; daughters Debbie Ng-Furuhashi (James), Sandy Niebling (Jeff), and Jackie Ng-Osorio (Kane); son Richard Ng (Jean); granddaughters Maddie, Isabella, and Petra; grandsons Aidan and Tobias; sisters Mary Wong (David) and Julia Lee; and brothers Larry Ng and John Ng. He was predeceased by his parents Soo Chung Ng and Julia Chun Lin Ng; sisters Margaret Wong, Katherine Quong and Rosemary Trimm.
