LINDA SEIFERT SCHLADERMUNDT APPEL On February 11, Linda Seifert Schladermundt Appel died peacefully surrounded by family at home in Kailua after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Linda was born in Lancaster PA and was a graduate of Manheim Central High School and the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. She moved to Hawaii in 1976 to begin a career dedicated to improving health care in Hawaii, particularly for those suffering from mental illness. She worked for 25 years for the Adult Mental Health Division of the Hawaii Department of Health. She led the effort to earn accreditation for Hawaii State Hospital and was awarded State Manager of the Year by Gov. Ben Cayetano in 1997. She was a founding member of the National Association for Healthcare Quality and was named a Fellow of NAHQ in recognition for her leadership as a healthcare quality professional. Linda’s passion was cooking and she was happiest entertaining family and friends in her kitchen. She is survived by husband Frank, sister Patty Seifert, daughter Ana Hobbs Schlader- mundt (TJ), stepson Scott Appel (Maisie), and grand- daughters Kaydn Schlader -mundt Hobbs and Molly Catherine Appel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice Hawaii (hospicehawaii.org) in Linda’s memory.

VERNON D.B. WONG Of Waipio, Oahu, Hawaii, a retired maintenance supervisor at Kapiolani Community College and longtime member of the Hawaii Goldfish and Carp Association, died at home at age 76 on Oct. 6, 2013. He was born in Honolulu on Feb. 22, 1937. He was an avid sportsman, spending his younger years hunting, golfing and fishing. His love of fishing led him to many parts of the world, including Brazil, where he caught a 16-pound peacock bass (pictured). His latter years were filled with the caring and breeding of award-winning koi in his backyard. Vernon Wong is survived by son Vincent E. Wong; sisters Winnie C.H. Nakatsu, Ruby C.H.
