Susan Haruno Takara92, yago Uchiuebaru, formerly of Kaneohe, Hawaii, passed away in Honolulu on June 27, 2019. Born September 15, 1926 to Kame and Kamado Taira, she was a cafeteria manager for the DOE and a waitress at the Tahitian Lanai for many years. Susan's husband, Ronald Yoshio Takara who predeceased her in 2003, served in the storied 442nd battalion during WWII as did two of her bothers, Masaru Taira and Wilfred Masaichi Taira, who also predecease her; she was an active and proud member of the 442nd Veteran's Club, Regimental Headquarters Chapter. Susan was also a loyal Oroku Aza Jin volunteer, mixing batter and making andagi at the annual Okinawan Festival. Besides her husband and brothers, Wilfred and Masaru, Susan is predeceased by brothers, Walter Takeo Taira and Richard Shigeo Taira; sisters, Hatsu Kamimura, Mary Masako McKeague and Edith Chiyoko Teruya. She is survived by brother Harry (Miriam) Taira; sisters, Jane "Mickey" Taira and Blanche (Kenneth) Kiyabu; and numerous nieces and nephews. WILLIAM “BILL” JOSEPH EWALIKO

93, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2018, in Salem, Oregon surrounded by family. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on April 25, 1925. Bill was one of nine siblings born to Edward and Victoria Ah Yat. At birth, he was hanai by William and Molly Ewaliko to carry on his grandmother's maiden name. Bill graduated from McKinley High School in Honolulu, Hawaii where he was an outstanding member of the football and track teams. In between high school and college he served honorably in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during WWII. He then graduated from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon and was an all-conference/small school All American as a running back football player and track team member. While at Willamette, he received the Booth Award as Student Athlete of the Year. He had a long career as a teacher and coach, beginning at high schools in Oregon and concluding at Kailua High School in Hawaii. He retired from the Hawaii State Department of Education in 1981 and moved to Grants Pass, where he and wife Jerri spent many years fishing on the Rogue River which was in their front yard. Predeceased by wife, Jerrilee Ewaliko; siblings Herman Frank Ah Yat, Ernest Ah Yat, Irving "Kaili" Ah Yat, Maria Artis and Edward Ah Yat. Survived by siblings Victoria "Lehua" Ward, Clement Ah Yat and Miriam "Kaimi" Sanders. Survived by children: Kerry (Dean) Kelley, Greg (Doris) Jenkins, Rod Ewaliko, Bary ("Keahi") Ewaliko, Martin (Lauren) Ewaliko, Lori (Bob) DeSouza, Kim (Rick) Bearden; ten grandchildren; five great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Private family funeral services are pending.

Machiko Sakurai Muratsuchi92 years old, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 4, 2019. Born in Gujo-Hachiman, Gifu, Japan on September 22, 1926, she grew up in Gifu and Nagoya and experienced the hardships of economic depression and survived the terrors of the bombings and fiery destruction of Nagoya in WWII. After the War, she studied tea ceremony, flower arranging, cooking and sewing as typical preparation for a Japanese marriage. However, at age 20, she married Joseph Muratsuchi, a Japanese-American born in Idaho, and his work eventually brought her and their children to Hawaii in 1959. Here, she worked as a cutter for two muumuu factories, Nali'i Fashions for 25 years and Jacqueline's of Hawaii for 5 years. She retired at the age of 62 and started her new life as an avid reader, traveler, and artist. After trying washi doll-making, t-shirt art, quilting, ceramics, etc., she focused on Taisho Koto, sumi-e painting, china painting and writing tanka poetry as a member of Hawaii Tanka Kai. Machiko's husband Joseph, son James (Peggy Jo) and brother Akio Sakurai preceded her in death. She is survived by daughter Irene Sadoyama (Wayne) and 5 grandchildren: Jared and Jordan Muratsuchi, Micah and Jonathan Sadoyama and Misa Higa, and 6 great-grandchildren. Joanna Fleming85, of Honolulu, passed away June 29, 2019. She is dearly missed by her daughters Marga and Lori Koennecke and friends near and far. She came to the islands in 1958 at the age of 24 to join the Honolulu Symphony as a cellist, and remained with the Symphony for over 50 years. She also taught cello at Punahou School for 50 years. She was born in Brooklyn, New York to Bill and Trudy Noble who moved to the islands to be near her in their final years. She is predeceased by her husband Bob Fleming. She is also survived by her first husband Fred Koennecke, son-in-law Stephen Wojtowicz, and stepchildren Jana, Tracy, Dana and Brad Fleming. A memorial service will be held in her honor on Saturday, July 20, 3:00 pm at Thurston Memorial Chapel, Punahou School. Arrangements Provided By: Oahu Cemetery Association

Thomas S. Dods THOMAS S. DODS Age 69, passed away at The Queen's Medical Center surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, April 11, 2019. He was born in Honolulu on May 8, 1949 to Walter Dods and Mildred Phillips. He obtained his high school diploma from Kalani High School in 1968. On September 14, 1974, he married Marilyn Lagapa. Throughout his 41 year career at First Hawaiian Bank, he forged many meaningful relationships with his coworkers and impacted the lives of those who knew him. Outside of work, he dedicated his time to the community as Santa Claus, bringing immeasurable joy and holiday spirit to children and adults alike each year. Thomas took great pride in his family's accomplishments and shared important events with his friends and colleagues. He is survived by his wife Marilyn Dods; children Dave (Kalele) Dods and Candace (Dillon) Jensen; grandchildren Westbrook Jensen and Payton Jensen, many siblings, nieces, and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held from 5:30 p.m.-10:00 p.m.; Service to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2019 Saint Louis Alumni Clubhouse, 916 Coolidge St., Honolulu. Lehman Lloyd Lanakila “Bud” Henry

Lehman Lloyd Lanakila 89, of Kaneohe passed away June 4, 2019. He was born on March 26, 1930 in Hilo and attended the Kamehameha School for Boys (KSB'47). He served in the U.S. Air Force where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt as a Navigator assigned to the Strategic Air Command's 308th Air Refueling Squadron at Hunter AFB. When he left the Air Force he returned to Hawaii to attend the University of Hawaii where he received his Masters Degree in Geography. His thesis was a 16mm movie (a first at the time for UH) and text that documented the area in East Oahu that is now known as Hawaii Kai. He was also on the UH geography team that created the first map of the State of Hawaii in 1959. In 1961, he became a Geographic Intelligence Officer with the U.S. Army Map Service, working out of Tokyo. He then worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs as the Economic Development Officer for the Ute Indian Tribe at Ft. Duchesne, UT. In 1968 he returned to Hawaii to work as an Operations Research Analyst for the Commander-in-Chief, Pacific (USCINCPAC). In 1976, he was selected as the Outstanding Non-supervisory Federal Employee of the Year. He retired from the U.S. Federal Government in 1990. A Kaneohe resident for many years, Bud was active in researching, documenting and preserving the ecology and culture of the area where he lived. He was a charter member of the Kaneohe Neighborhood Board and a founding member of The Friends of Heeia State Park and served as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors for over 10 years. Intent on the preservation of ancient Hawaiian fishponds, his book on the subject, with focus on Heeia Fishpond, was published in 1993. In 1998, he was presented the Historic Preservation Honor Award by the Historic Hawaii Foundation. In 2001, Bud received a City and County of Honolulu Outstanding Senior Citizen Award for his work with Friends of Heeia State Park, and in 2002 he was inducted into the University of Hawaii and UH Alumni Association Golden Scholar Society. Bud's interest in travel took him all over the world. Places that had specific impact are Rapa Nui, Vietnam, Tibet, Indonesia, Laos and the Pacific Nations he visited - Tuvalu, Samoa, Fiji, the Cook Islands, French Polynesia, and the Tuamotus and Marquesas Islands. Bud is predeceased by wife Anita S. (High) Henry. He is survived by daughters Lisa Henry-Hamilton (George) and Lee Henry-Chang (Brad); grandchildren Laura Chang, Christopher Hamilton, Hiilani Chang, Faith Hamilton; and brother Leslie M. Henry.
