TEIJI FRANK OKANO

Feb 1, 1920 - Dec 9, 2018 Teiji was a kind, fun-loving family man. After his wife, Reiko, passed a year ago, he still managed to enjoy Seattle Seahawk games; his desserts; his dog; the grand/great grandkids' visits, and occasional beer, to which he attributed his long life. The middle child of five, he grew up fishing in the Puget Sound - he even caught a (mud)shark once. At 16, he lied about his age so he could work at a salmon fishery one summer in Alaska, and was proud to earn enough to buy his own car. While attending the University of Washington, Pearl Harbor was bombed. His parents and siblings were suddenly sent to the Minidoka Internment camp in Idaho. He was forced to leave UW, enlisted, and was sent to the Pacific as a linguist with the Military Intelligence Service. His father would die of cancer while interned. At 26, he met Reiko while stationed in Tokyo, a beautiful Japanese girl of 23 and romance ensued. Americans, however, were discouraged from marrying the Japanese. After submitting a marriage request he was transferred back to California instead. He applied for a return post in Japan, but was unsuccessful and eventually honorably discharged. Teiji reenlisted hoping to be stationed in Japan, but with bad timing, he was deployed to the Korean War. Marriage was now allowed. From Korea, he asked his brother, George, stationed in Japan, to stand in for him, to finally marry Reiko. They were happily married for 70 years. Married life in Japan was good with 3 children. Teiji worked for the Army and Air Force Exchange and taught Reiko to party with him at the military clubs- dancing, drinking and playing slot machines. On the weekend, when he wasn't golfing, he was always looking for ways to have fun with his kids, fishing, fruit picking, or bowling. He took his family on vacations to the onsen, and many summers in Seattle to visit family. In 1967, the US started closing the military bases in Japan. Teiji was reassigned to Fort Dix, New Jersey then to Shreveport, Louisiana. Those were tough times, with a wife who spoke no English and teenagers in tow. But he made sure to show them all the sights and National Parks along the way. Luckily he was transferred to Hawaii, the perfect compromise for the family, as Teiji always wanted to live in Seattle, and Reiko in Tokyo. Teiji, with Reiko, played a major role in raising their granddaughters. They loved babysitting, frequenting playgrounds, driving them to after school activities, and eating shave ice. He would take the granddaughters to golf, but as he grew too old, the girls would take him to the driving range. Teiji is remembered golfing, singing karaoke, growing flowers, drinking beer, and spending time with his friends and relatives. He enjoyed family vacations abroad and annual Las Vegas trips with Reiko and Cathy, until he was 92. He loved his dogs, outliving Crisco, then Popo, but Kooper was his best friend in the end. Thank you, Dad, for your quiet guidance and for giving us such a good life. Teiji is survived by Patrick (wife Tae Hee), Cathy, Joyce, granddaughters: Mariko (Kanoa), Remy (Luis), Kenna (Dalton), and great-grand- daughters: Riley, Aya, Hili, and another one on her way.

Miriam “Mim” Lang

Miriam It is a fearful thing to love what death has touched on November 10, 2018. Miriam "Mim" Lang, 87, of Kailua, Hawaii died in Francesca's exceptional caring, caretaker home in Kaneohe, Hawaii. Born in New York City, the younger daughter of Jack and Sadie Siegal. Mim is buried in the State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe. God created Mim, with the help of her mother and father, and saw how good she was. Mim earned her BS in Early Childhood Education at the State University College in New Paltz, New York and later her MA at Columbia University Teachers College in Educational Psychology, specializing in the diagnosing and remediation of early childhood schoolchildren's problems. After teaching four years in New York and New Jersey and marrying her college sweetheart Melvin Lang they returned in 1969 to Hawaii where they had previously spent a year with their three young sons, Marc, Eric and Matthew. Mim was immediately employed at Kailua Elementary School as a primary grade teacher from 1969 to 1993. Mim lit up her kindergarten children with love, care, and the law of kindness on her lips. Her many former students, now adults, would greet her in Kailua town with happy memories of their school days together, hoping she would still be teaching at Kailua elementary school to teach their children! Mim kept albums of class photos with the students' names for every class she taught. In 1972, Mim and her family spent a year in Canberra, Australia where she was hired as a faculty member to help develop an innovative early childhood program for teachers at the newly designed Canberra College of Advanced Education, now the University of Canberra. Mim's teaching psychology and life's philosophy were influenced by Robert Fulghum's essay, "All I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten." "These are the things I learned: Share. Play fair. Don't hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don't take things that aren't yours. Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Learn some and think some and draw and paint and dance and play and work every day some. When you go out into the world watch for traffic, hold hands and stick together. Think of what a better world it would be if we had a basic policy in our nation, and other nations, to always put things back where we found them and cleaned up our own messes, and it is still true no matter how old you are, when you go out into the world it's best to hold hands." In 2009 Mim was honored with the 'Woman of Valor' award for her services to the Sisterhood of Temple Emanu-El. Her comments upon accepting the Award included: "l'd like to share some thoughts for the privilege of being chosen. I love everything that's old; my maturing sons, old students, old friends like you, old times, old manners, old books and my old husband! When my family and I joined the Aikido Yoshinkai martial arts group at the YBA, our traditional Japanese Sensei Noguchi, always addressing me as, "professor's wife", thought I was an exceptional student because I gave my husband three sons! My wish to you all is; may God grant us the most precious gift of peace and proclaim its message to all the peoples of the earth. May contentment rain within the nations of the world, and health and happiness within its homes. Strengthen the bonds of friendship among the inhabitants of all lands. And keep safe the members of our own armed forces wherever they may be." Mim's surviving former students and colleagues, friends, 4 grand- children, four great-granddaughters, three sons and husband of 62 years will miss her smiling face and the comforting embrace of her arms. Mim's humorous motto on her favorite T-shirt, explaining her sweet tooth was, "Give me your chocolate and nobody gets hurt!" Relatives and friends are invited to Mim's "Celebration of Life", which is planned for Sunday, January 6th at 2PM at Temple Emanu-El, 2550 Pali Hwy., Honolulu. Refreshments to follow. Jonathan Ross Kaho`OkahI SutherlandFebruary 5, 1946 - November 29, 2018 Island boy, Jon Sutherland, bid his last aloha to his ohana and his adopted Carmel Valley community on November 29th, at the age of 72, as a result of heart failure. He passed away peacefully, wearing a ginger lei, lulled by tunes of the Brothers Cazimero, and with his beloved wife Mary & his two daughters by his side. Born in Honolulu, Hawai`i on February 5, 1946 to Muriel & Ross Sutherland, Jon was a 1964 Punahou School graduate and loyal member of Whittier College's class of '68. A lifelong athlete, Jon was a joyful & playfully competitive sportsman. He played football, baseball, volleyball, tennis, and golf up through college and beyond. From surfing to skiing, there simply wasn't a sport he didn't love or excel in! Above all was Jon's passion for outrigger canoe paddling and horseback riding. He started riding a horse at age 6 and was in the water with Fred Hemmings by age 10. Both were lifelong pleasures for him. In Hawai`i, he was a member of the Outrigger Canoe Club until his death & Wai`alae Country Club for 40 years. He paddled and later coached at Outrigger for 25 years and was on the winning crew to cross the Moloka`i Channel in 1968. Jon enjoyed playing golf & tennis at Wai`alae and was also the Club Champion. Inheriting his father's love of haberdashery & fine taste in clothing, Jon owned & managed the Ross Sutherland Store in Honolulu for many years. He later practiced real estate in Hawai`i & Carmel Valley, California for over 30 years. Jon's greatest gift, as all who knew & loved him appreciated, was as social organizer. His pleasure in planning & executing occasions of all sorts was legendary! He shared his love of life, his generous heart, his sweet disposition, and his enjoyment of friends & familynot to mention his rascally twinklefar and wide. Jon & Mary were married in 2000 and moved to Carmel Valley, CA with their horses & doggies in 2001. His magnetism for friendship ensured that they were immediately embraced by the community. Jon, of course, became a local social director. He relished the camaraderie of the "Bocce Boys", a group of men devoted to bocce, making wine, and the high art of telling tales. What fun they had! He loved riding horses, playing golf at Carmel Valley Ranch, the fellowship of his Carmel community, and traveling to Hawai`i annually to visit with dear family & friends. Gone, but never forgotten . . . may he rest in love. A descendant of James & Abigail Campbell, Jon is survived by his wife Mary, his daughter Tiffany, her husband Jebb, and their children Emalia, Charles & Jackson of Windham, NH and his daughter Starr, her husband Paul, and their daughters Ella & Sofia of Kamuela, HI. Survivors also include his brother Robert "Lindy" (Cherry-Anne) Sutherland, his sister Alicia "Auwe" Morris, numerous nieces & nephews, extended family & a host of long-time friends. In addition to his parents, Jon was pre-deceased by his daughter, Blair Sutherland, and his brother, Fred Trotter, III. Celebrations of his Life will be private and held in Honolulu & Carmel Valley. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to:: The James and Abigail Campbell Family Foundation James Campbell Building, Suite 200 1001 Kamokila Blvd Kapolei, HI 96707 or Montage Health Foundation Attn: Cancer Center 40 Ryan Court, Suite 200 Monterey, CA 93940 or a charity of your choice.
