DIANA PAW U Diana Paw U; known in Burmese as Daw Min Sein U, daughter of U Kyaw Min and Daw Sein Tha, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday August 23rd, 2013 in Davis, California, after a short illness. She was born Nov. 26, 1925 in Akyab (now called Sittwe) in the Arakan (Rakhine) section of Burma (Myanmar), but spent much of her childhood in Rangoon (Yangon). A devoted wife and caring, full-time mother, she is survived by her half-sister Min Min Thaw (and family) of Sacramento, California, eldest son Mya Sein Paw U of Hilo, Hawai’i, youngest son Kyaw Tha Paw U & daughter-in-law Ruth Adele Bartlett of Davis, CA, and grand-daughters Latisha Tha Zin Bartlett Paw U of Berkeley, California; Clarissa Nila Bartlett Paw U and Catriana Karuna Bartlett Paw U of Davis, California. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 60 years, Richard Paw U and middle son Htaw Aung Min Paw U. She married U Richard Paw U in Nov 1946 and shortly thereafter they moved to New York City where he pursued graduate studies at Columbia University and she took classes in botany and cosmeticology at Barnard College. In 1949 Richard joined the then fledgling United Nations. Diana partnered with him as his career took them to many places around the world until retirement in 1983. She was active in the UN Women’s Guild, and was an accomplished chef and hostess. She also acted as an “auntie” to Nobel laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi while Suu was working at the UN office in New York. Diana and Richard retired to Kane’ohe, Hawai’i where they lived for over two decades. She was a co-founder (along with husband Richard and Rev. Fujitani) of the Hawaii Association of International Buddhists (HAIB), a non-profit NGO. She also raised water lotuses, and was a fine potter and porcelain painter. She devoted her last years in Hawai’i caring for Richard during a degenerative illness; and after her husband’s passing away moved to Davis, California, where she lived with her youngest son and family.
