ANDREW ARNOAndrew Arno died on 19 November 2016 in Honolulu, Hawaii. An emeritus professor of anthropology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, he was born in Alexandria, Virginia, and grew up in San Antonio and Austin, Texas. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Texas at Austin in 1965 and received his JD with honors from the University of Texas School of Law in 1969. He received his PhD in social anthropology from Harvard University in 1974. Following a year as a postdoctoral fellow at Yale Law School he joined the faculty of John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. He moved to Hawaii in 1977 to become a research associate in the Communication Institute at the East-West Center and joined the faculty of the University of Hawaii in 1985. His years in law school led to a fascination with law as a powerful social and cultural institution. As an anthropologist he applied his broad background in the humanities, particularly philosophy, to a deeper understanding not only of law but also of mass media and other ways of communicating about social conflict. As a teacher he encouraged students in their own interdisciplinary approaches to contemporary issues and earned their gratitude as a generous and inspiring mentor. Andrew's wide-ranging interests and creative talents were reflected in the arts as well as in his scholarship. He was a gifted artist and craftsman, with a large legacy of work that began with the crafting of arrowheads as a boy in Texas and continued throughout his life in his painting, jewelry making, and woodworking. Andrew lived his life to the end with grace and humor. He is survived by his wife, Letitia Hickson; his daughter, Claudia Arno (Samuel Brenner); his granddaughter, Alexandra Brenner; his brother James Arno (Marguerite Johnston); and his sister-in-law Mary Arno. He was preceded in death by his brother Michael Arno. Donations in his name may be made to the Hawaii Appleseed Center for Law and Economic Justice or to the University of Hawaii Foundation Anthropology Alumni Scholarship.

KONG April 24, 1929 - March 28, 2017 Our beloved Mary Eleanor (Braddock) Kong, was born on April 24, 1929 in Ripley, Mississippi. She graduated from Blue Mountain College and pursued her Master's Degree in Church Music at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. It was there that she met and married her husband, the Rev. Daniel H.C. Kong, a native of Hawai`i. Together they served churches in Shakertown, KY; Wahiawa, HI and Honolulu, HI. In addition to raising four daughters, Mary took an active roll in each church pastored by Dan. She directed children's, youth and adult choirs. She also volunteered in the nursery, taught classes, and served as church pianist and organist. As her daughters became older, Mary enjoyed working at Liberty House as a sales associate, developing lifelong friendships with many of her customers. Mary's leadership extended beyond her positions within the churches Dan pastored. At Hawai`i Baptist Academy she directed the High School and Handbell Choirs, and later became Development Director. She also provided many talents as Director of the Women's Missionary Union for the Hawai`i Pacific Baptist Convention. At the age of fifty-five, Mary embarked on a new adventure, pursuing her life-long desire to play the harp. She became a professional harpist, performing for weddings, funerals, several hotels, coffee houses, private parties and conventions. She especially enjoyed volunteering her talent for many community events, including the annual Memorial Tree Service for Kapi`olani Medical Center for Women and Childrenan event for which she played seventeen years. In 2008, Mary moved to the Island of Maui where she resided with daughters Verdine and Eddy who shared in her care until death. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Daniel H.C. Kong, her infant daughter, Tommye-Lei Kong, and her parents, Verdie Welch Braddock and Thomas N. Braddock. BRIAN EVERETT KEO JOHNSONMarch 17, 1973 - April 16, 2012 You were taken from us much too soon for in an instant you were gone How are we supposed to pick up the pieces and carry on How could it all have gone so wrong As we try to find the strength to be strong When we lost you, it left such an empty space As we tried to find comfort knowing you are in a better place We have missed you since you've been gone But the memories of you will forever linger on We miss the things you used to say We miss your smile and your thoughtful ways You would always put others before yourself .....a quality so rare You truly were a son, brother, father and uncle beyond compare We were so blessed to have had you for 39 years And even though it's been 5 years, the thought of you still brings us to tears Though you had to leave us behind You are never far from our minds And although we are not together, we will never be apart Because you will always have a special place in our hearts. We all love you so much, Mom, Dad, Family and Friends

MA'A Our beloved Dad, Grandpa, and Great-Grandpa, Maatulimanu Solosolo Asuega went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 23rd, 2017. No longer in pain but in peace, he was lovingly received by our beloved Mother, Aloiafi, his son Thomas, and his daughter Marie with comfort and relief, knowing that his suffering is no more. Loved and missed by man, you will remain in our hearts forever. Born November 28, 1936 and raised in Pago Pago, American Samoa until the late 1950's when he came to Hawai'i to begin a life here. He met and married our Mom in the early 1960's and had five of us children. He retired from the Honolulu Transport Warehouse (now Kano Trucking) as a warehouse foreman supervisor. His coworkers knew him by "Stone" because his first name means "Cornerstone", "Ma'a" short for stone. He was an active member of the Tenant Association Committee at Mayor Wright Homes where he initiated and implemented the first Neighborhood Security Watch program in the state of Hawai'i. He was also an active member of the Samoan Flag Day Committee in the 1990's where for the first time in Hawai'i, Native Hawaiians participated in the August 1996 event. The Hokule'a Voyaging Canoe and its crew sailed into Keehi Lagoon on the morning of August 9th, where about 100 Samoans greeted them with a traditional kava ceremony. From humble beginnings until the end, our Dad was always proud of his children, and his HC Asuega Family for their firm belief in God, our custom and culture.
