Clyde William Campbell Died February, 11, 2017 in Kaneohe, HI. Born in Caney, Kansas on November 28, 1920 to Clyde Watson Campbell and Mabel Marie Noe Campbell. As the son of a wildcat oil well driller, he learned the meaning of a long day's work and of the satisfaction that day can bring. Clyde lived these principles every day for the rest of his life. The family moved to Marietta, Ohio while Clyde was still a youth and there Clyde attended Marietta High School and then Marietta College. At Marietta, he was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity, the college crew team and was Phi Beta Kappa when he graduated with a BS Degree in Geology in 1942. After college, he went to work in Firestone Tire and Rubber Co.'s synthetic rubber research project, a high interest area of the US government during WW II. During this time, he met the love of his life Virginia Dulaney who was home on convalescent leave from test flying bomber aircraft as a Woman's Army Service Pilot (WASP). They married a year later and with the war having ended, Firestone sent the family off to Brazil where Clyde was a technical consultant to the company's Brazilian operations. During this time, Virginia returned to Akron, Ohio to give birth to their first child Cristina. After Brazil, he spent a short time at Firestone Corporate Headquarters in Akron and then spent the rest of his Firestone career in overseas assignments beginning in Viskafors, Sweden where Virginia gave birth to their second child, Kim. After Sweden came Hamburg, Germany and finally Christchurch, New Zealand from 1958 to 1977. He served as General Manager of Firestone New Zealand and Australia. During his time in New Zealand he was elected to President of the Christchurch Rotary Club and served in that position for five years. Clyde retired in 1977 from Firestone and he and Virginia moved from Christchurch to Kailua Kona where they lived until 1990 when they moved to Oahu and settled in Aiea Heights. His wife Virginia passed away in 2001 and Clyde eventually moved into Pohai Nani retirement community where he spent the remainder of his days. Clyde was deeply religious and belonged to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Aiea. He volunteered much of his time as a member of the church's directing board and was an active member of the church's program in helping the homeless. He continued his religious devotion at Pohai Nani reading scripture at services and singing in the choir. Clyde is survived by his sister Marilyn, daughter Cristina Rathyen of Kailua, and son Kim Campbell of New Zealand. He was loved by his grandchildren; Michael, Giniene, Benjamin, Jason, and Tristan, and his six great grandchildren. Services will be held at Pohai Nani and his ashes will be taken to New Zealand to join Virginia in the waters off the South Island.
