Dr. H. Roy McArdle Henry Roy McArdle "Roy "was born in the Bronx, New York on December 10, 1919 and passed away on September 13th, 2016. He was the only child of Harry McArdle and Elizabeth "Lillian" Cantwell McArdle. Roy was especially close to and proud of his father who was a detective in the New York City Police Department. Harry died when Roy was quite young and Dad worked hard delivering papers and other odd jobs to help provide for his mother. Roy attended Manhattan College and graduated from Columbia with a degree in Business Administration. He was a proud member of both schools' swim teams. He spent summers working at a Camp Fire Girls Camp as a handy man. It was there that he met the love of his life, Helen Marian Forstner. After a long courtship, they were married on September 9, 1950. Dad was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy on December 12th, 1941, 5 days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was eventually promoted to Lieutenant Commander serving on a number of ships as a Supply Corp. Officer. He served in WWII in the American and Pacific Theatres and was awarded the Victory World War II medal and the Defense Service medal. In 1957 Roy moved his growing family with four children to Hawaii. He had been stationed there during the war, and desired to retire there. Two more children were born in Hawaii and he retired from the Navy after 22 years of service in 1963. Shortly after retiring from the Navy, Roy started at the University of Hawaii in a newly created position in charge of Career Placement with only a desk and no office. Under his leadership, the department grew as he developed strong relationships with different employers to showcase the university's graduates. He was able to build the department quickly and eventually earned an official office. Twenty five years later, he retired from the University, being honored by many who benefited from his expertise and encouragement. Dad was a lifelong learner and earned his Master's Degree in Business from the University of Hawaii and his Doctorate from University of New Mexico. Roy enjoyed his retirement years with Helen by travelling and connecting with family and friends. He also became an avid runner, and ran a marathon at the age of 60. He was an Iolani Palace docent and very involved with Hospice Hawaii and was recognized as a volunteer of the year. He was very proud of his Irish-Catholic heritage with a lifetime commitment to the Catholic Church. He loved life and made sure we created memories as a family with many planned adventures, endless traditions and silly songs! He also kept in touch with friends he had as a youngster and throughout his life - he had so much fun recalling all the good times, entertaining and sharing our home. Dad had an unwavering commitment to and love for his family. He was the epitome of faithfulness to Helen, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He provided well, and left an incredible legacy for all of us. Dad took special interest in each of us and loved spending time with us individually offering words of encouragement, sound advice and recalling stories of his meaningful life. Dad was a humble man, the ultimate gentleman, and an impeccable dresser. He loved life and we all miss his warmth and smiling blue eyes. We adored our father and are blessed to have been guided by his integrity, honesty, positive attitude, guiding hand, and commitment to doing what was right. He was truly the best of the Greatest Generation. We miss him but we know he is back together with his bride and our mother after enjoying a life well lived! Helen and Roy are survived by their six children: Patrice McArdle, Kenneth McArdle, Lynne McArdle Russell (Gordon), Elizabeth McArdle Solomon (Fred), Kevin McArdle (Jessica), Michele Ka'iulani McArdle Baginski (John). There are 19 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. A special thank you to Lea, Mele and Emily Vaioleti for taking such loving and good care of our Father. Services are January 3rd at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 148 Makawao Street, Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii, 96734. Military honors are at 1:30 and church services at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Anthony of Padua Church.
