MARK R. ARNOLD, NEWSPAPER EXECUTIVE Mark R. Arnold, a senior executive of the Gannett newspaper corporation, and part of the founding team of USA Today, passed away on September 17, 2016. Arnold, who began his newspaper career in 1950 at the Johnstown Tribune (Pennsylvania), held numerous positions in the advertising and marketing side of the newspaper business, including Senior Vice President of the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, and Vice President for Advertising for the Gannett Newspaper Division. It was in that role that Arnold, along with other senior Gannett executives, founded USA Today in 1982. In 1985, Arnold became the Senior Vice President of Gannett's Hawaii Newspaper Agency, based in Honolulu. During his tenure at the Agency, Arnold's efforts led the company to record growth, an accomplishment for which his peers in the industry recognized him as Hawaii's Advertising Executive of the Year in 1995. Arnold retired from the newspaper industry in 1997, but continued to provide advice and guidance to peers for many years. Mark Arnold was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the last months of World War II, and for a year after the peace. Following his discharge from the Army he attended Penn State University on the G. I. Bill and was a proud alumnus of the university. He was a lifetime Mason and Rotary Club member. He was also a devoted member of the Church of Christ, Scientist, and was selected to be a first reader in each of the three churches he was a member of (New Jersey, New York, and Hawaii). Arnold was an accomplished jazz drummer, sometimes sitting in with combos first in the New York suburbs during his years in Bronxville, NY, and in Honolulu after moving there in 1985. Remembered by all who knew him as witty, optimistic, and unfailingly cheerful, Mark Arnold brightened every room he entered. Born in Stroudsburg, PA in 1926, Arnold is preceded in death by his first wife Carolyn Ramesdorfer Arnold and their daughter, Deborah Berve. He is survived by two children from his first marriage, Carol Hanauer and Mark Edward Arnold, and by his wife Carolyn Scott Arnold and her three children, Susan Kelly, Stephen Dillon, and Scott Dillon, 12 grand children and 12 great-grand children. A celebration of his life will be held on October 30 in Denver, Colorado.
