$nameIRIS LILLIAN (COWIE) HALLARAN November 28, 1915 - November 2, 2015 Our wonderful and daring Iris is off on another new adventure! After a brief illness, Iris departed this life on November 2, 2015 from Arcadia, California. Iris instinctively considered herself a resident of Hawaii, and subsequently a citizen of the world. Iris was born in New Zealand and raised in Tahiti, California, and Utah. She travelled the world throughout her life and loved to share stories about her adventures and her travels. From riding elephants, camels, and ostrich's, to visiting the North and South Poles, riding dog sleds, sleeping in wild Africa with lions outside her tent, and performing in the Grand Canyon and dancing ballet in San Francisco - Iris was always eager to see and do new things. Iris arrived in Honolulu in 1948 and soon met and married her one true love - Pat Hallaran. Together they built and ran the successful restaurant and cottages known as Pat's at Punalu'u. Iris and Pat loved the restaurant, loved the guests, and loved the Hawaiian lifestyle. One of her favorite memories was that of walking out her front door and going for a swim with her neighbors and her German shepherd in the warm waters and tranquil bay. When Pat passed away in 1969, Iris became an adventure traveler - something they had always planned to do as a couple when they retired. Iris was an active member of SCORE in Honolulu, and participated in many charitable organizations throughout her life in Hawaii. Her love of Hawaii never wavered. Iris will be missed, but will never be forgotten. She was a remarkable woman who embraced the Aloha spirit. Thank you to her many friends in Honolulu for your friendship and for those who helped her along the way. A private memorial service will be held for Iris in Hawaii later this month.

$nameTHELMA B. MENDES DECEMBER 20, 1918 - MAY 21, 2016 Born to John and Adelaide Botelho, Thelma grew up and spent her early adult years in the Punchbowl area. With her husband John Mendes, their two sons, Tommy and Ronald, they moved to Kaneohe, then added to their family three more children: Mary, Anne-Marie and Darryle. One might remember Thelma as the smiling face behind the counters at Kaneohe Bakery for many years. But the more important jobs she held were being the devoted wife of John for 46 years before his passing, and a nurturing and loving mom to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Thelma was a very strong, kind and caring woman and was selfless when it came to her family, always working hard to provide, yet very content with the many blessings God had already given. Thelma was a devoted Catholic and an active member of St. Ann's and then St. Anthony's Church after moving to Kailua. She volunteered at St. Anthony's Outreach Center and in their financial ministry. Also a very active member of the Young Ladies Institute for over 50 years, she served the community and developed life- long friendships that she cherished dearly. She is survived by her sons Tom (Melvine), Darryle (Marcie), daughter Anne-Marie Lum (Mike) and daughter-in-law Francine Mendes, along with 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband John, son Ronald and daughter Mary. Her Family is very grateful to Zafira Anhalt and the staff at Kailua Gardens for the loving care they provided during her last two years. Services will be held on Thurs. June 16, 2016 at St. Anthony Church in Kailua, 9:30 am Visitation, 10:30 am Mass. Burial will be at 1pm at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery.
