SISTER JULIE LOUISE THEVENIN, SS.CC. Sr. Julie Louise Thevenin (Violet) died peacefully in sleep on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at the convent of Malia O Ka Malu. She was 97 years old. Sister had been hospitalized for a time, and later returned home under hospice care. Sr. Julie Louise was born on September 18, 1918 in Honolulu to Alfred Joseph Thevenin and Maile Elizabeth Cowan Thevenin. Sr. Julie Louise attended Sacred Hearts Academy and graduated in 1936. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in 1938, and was a teacher at Sacred Hearts Academy from 1940 to 1959. She also directed the Girl Scouts Program, the Athletic Club, Junior Red Cross, Yearbook Production and organized the school's annual Fair. In 1959-1960, she did Art Studies in Paris, France. In 1963-1968, she taught at Sacred Hearts Academy in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, then in 1968, she was teacher, then principal at Maria Regina School in Gardena, California. She returned to Hawaii in 1982 to continue teaching until her retirement in 1984. Although residing at Regina Pacis, she continued to be interested in the activities of Sacred Hearts Academy. Illness in 2014 prompted her to be retired at our central infirmary at Malia O Ka Malu, where she passed away peacefully. She is survived by her nieces, a nephew and numerous cousins and friends. Visitation 9 a.m. on Monday (February 8, 2016) at Sacred Hearts Academy, 3253 Waialae Avenue in Kaimuki, MASS at 11:30 a.m., (additional parking available at St. Patrick's Church), burial to follow 1 p.m. at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please give a donation to the Sacred Hearts Academy Scholarship Fund. Funeral arrangements by Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary.

Kuwabara, O.D., F.A.A.O. was an alumnus of Iolani School, attended the University of Hawaii-Manoa and was a 1970 graduate of the Southern California College of Optometry. After serving in the Navy he joined Dr. Stanley Yamane in 1973 in the optometric practice which is known today as Eye Care Associates of Hawaii. In addition to caring for his patients, Dr. Kuwabara was very active in the optometric community, holding many positions in the past including president of the State Board of Optometry, the Hawaii Optometric Association, the Laser Eye Center of Hawaii, and the Hawaii Chapter of the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Kuwabara was also very active in the community, most notable spending many years with the West Oahu YMCA. Up until his passing, Dr. Kuwabara was dedicated to the profession of optometry and enjoyed caring for his patients. He will be missed by his partners and staff at Eye Care Associates of Hawaii. Dr. Kuwabara is survived by wife Judy, daughters Jennifer Naples (Robert), Susan Ma (Lawrence), brother Edward, sister Mildred Nakagawa, and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, February 7 at the Mililani Memorial Park and Mortuary Mauka Chapel. Visitation at 9:00 am, service to start at 10:00 am.

MICHAEL JOHN WALTHER Dec. 8, 2015 Mike Walther, 62, was born at Tripler Army Hospital to Marjorie Anne (Hluboky) of Kalihi, and Michael Keill. He died in Portland, Oregon. Mike grew up Kailua to Ka'a'awa and enjoyed surfing and playing the drums. He was a Naval Radioman, worked at Koko Head Stables, attended Control Data Institute and owned Computer Tutor. Married in 1978, Mike and Karen settled in Klamath Falls, taught country-western dancing, performed with several teams, and enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling with their dogs. Mike loved a good laugh and always had one to share. He is survived by his wife, two siblings, nephews, nieces, cousins and Aunt Frances Hluboky. Condolences to 643 N. Judd St., Honolulu, 96817.
